‘Art has to change things, and if it was immediately acceptable it would not be doing the job.’ - Antony Gormley

Whilst an older piece of work, the editorial version of my dissertation is one of my favourites. I wrote my dissertation in my final year of university about Antony Gormley and his practice, and explored how his work provokes tangiable emotion and physical responses, and whether that can lead to positive (or negative) self-reflection.

I wanted to create a journey that followed Gormley’s ideas of our conscious self being held within our bodies, and how we can experience liberation from the bodily boundaries. I split the publication into multiple different elements, which begin with a dark, small introduction card and end in a large fold out poster on a bright white paper.

Each elements plays with form and layout, visually representing the emotions mentioned in the text. The colours and binding are an ode to Gormley’s preferred mediums, harsh metals and natural materials, which add to feelings of uncertainty and discomfort.
