I Care For Myself - motion graphics

I Care for Myself is a collaboration between myself and multi-media artist Babette Van Gerwen, as a commission for Ridley Road Market Bar’s ‘Orbit’ programme, assisted funded by the Arts Council.

The programme sought to showcase emerging Female, Femme, NB, GNC, and Trans talent, as well as LGBTQ+ artists and allies, by broadcasting live and pre-recorded DJ sets and artistic interventions from the heart of Dalston.

For our piece, we wanted to explore the idea of finding your whole world within yourself, without the need for external perspectives or attachment. Babette created some illustrations inspired by female anatomy, which I then took and explored adding layering, texture and movement.

The movement of frames, sometimes regular, sometimes irregular, relates to the restrictions imposed (mentally and physically) on female-identifying people, and the experience of attempting to explore themselves outside of those boundaries. We used segments of text from Jane Eyre, a well-known text for it’s early feminist perspective, displayed in a typeface designed by women, to further embed ideas of empowerment and strength, and challenge the feelings of limitation and restriction.

The final output was a ~2 minute video, with several stills pulled out to exist independently as pieces of art.
